Gene Ontology
The HOMD automatic genome annotation pipeline includes the prediction of gene functions base o­n the terminology and categorization of genes defined by the Gene O­ntology (GO) database. The GO project has developed three structured controlled vocabularies (ontologies) that describe gene products in terms of their associated biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions. The gene function prediction in HOMD is based o­n the BLASTP search of the ORFs of a genome in query,  against the well-curated protein database Swissprot. The GO IDs curated and embedded in each of the Swissprot proteins that has significant sequence homology with the ORFs of a genome, are collected and mapped to the GO vocabulary tree.
